Oh What a Day...

Thursday, January 8, 2009

This was our day to be really adventurous. And, this is a really long post...

At first, we were going to be crazy and go to Insadong AND Yongsan Electronics Market. Well, we determined that with 2 little girls, that might be a wee CRAZY. Insadong is really neat & I wanted PGUB to experience it...plus, it is supposed to have a HUGE music store. Lots of instruments for my father--some insane number like 200 vendors or something like that. I can't wait to leave my dad there see it, so next time we'll give it a try!

Anyhow, we headed to the train station bound for Yongsan Electronics Market (it won because we didn't have to change trains!). So, I went to the Pyeongtaek Station and we spent 15 minutes figuring out how to get tickets. I asked the guy at the counter what time the express train would get there and he checked his little sheet and told us 10:27. Okay. We went outside to wait in the freezing cold. More people joined us, and a train came. They all got on it. We waited because we wanted the FAST one. Sure enough, at 10:27, the express rolled by...ON THE MIDDLE TRACKS! Okay, Plan B. Get on the next train. We do and literally 2 minutes later, Abby informs me that she has to go to the bathroom. Are you kidding me? Those of you with kids know that this is no surprise. So, knowing I had no choice but to make the best of it, asked her if she could make it for a few minutes longer. See, I KNEW if we got to Suwon, we could get on the FAST train & I was determined. Oh, forgot to mention that we weren't at the Pyeongtaek Station originally...I had taken us to the Jinwi Station. Silly me.

The FAST, express, whatever you want to call it train, is awesome. It's like Amtrak. Big, cushy seats with lots of space. I could nurse without a bunch of people gawking at me. It was warm. We went through 2 or 3 stops and we were at the electronics market. On to lunch and then we found an area with lots of guitars and pianos for my dad to play. So, I'm am pooling everyone's won together to make one of the guys a deal on a guitar, and my dad can't find his wallet. He & my brother head back to the restaurant and have no luck. We go to the help desk, but no one has turned a wallet in. It's just a helpless feeling to lose something like that in a foreign country where it's hard to communicate. My dad was pretty upset about it, but there was nothing we could do at that point. Thankfully, he only lost a portion of his things (he had left quite a bit back at the house) and we were able to cancel everything he needed to. We left soon after the wallet incident. It really was fine and I felt good that I had finally braved the train/subway/metro. We went back to base & got a new ID card for him. He felt like he ruined everyone's trip, but I was pretty impressed that we did all that and didn't freak out! I just liked being with all of them, even if it didn't turn out exactly right.

On the slow train back, we were crammed in like sardines...lots of nice Koreans volunteered to give their seat up, so Beks and I could sit down. They all flirted with her and Abby got some goodies from a group of Korean school girls. Then, Bekah got hungry. Why didn't I feed her at the train station? Can anyone tell me? Did it seem smart to be wedged between 2 Korean men and have to do it? Especially fun because a Korean woman kept telling me Beks was hungry. Thanks.

Here is the ONLY picture of the day at Yongsan Electronics Market...

We picked this sandwich place to eat lunch because it had cheese toast on the menu. Abby wasn't feeling too crazy about a Japense lunch. So the boys had Japanese and the girls went for sandwiches and coffees! Abby, her cheese toast, and the whipped cream for it...what? See, things are just a little different here!

We were tired and didn't feel like doing anything, but we ventured off base again to eat some dinner.

I LOVE the part of Korean culture that loves our babies.

They love kids and Beks loves them. This is one of her new friends at one of my new favorite places. I think it's called Han's Bulgolgi House...yummy sides and the steamed & yaki mandu are awesome. Every time we have eaten there, Beks has been promptly carried away and entertained. Work it girl. What will she think when she moves to the U.S.? Poor baby will no longer be the center of attention!

Random Pictures from the PGUB Trip...

Dad snapped this & they asked him to not take anymore. Weird, because I have taken them before & no one has said a word. So, no close-up pictures of the shrimp burger or bulgolgi burger!

Bekah & her UB
(not sure what happened to her hair bow on the headband...it just manages to look like a baby sweatband!)

The whole gang (okay, minus Pawpaw)

Abby is awesome with the trainer chopsticks...she was eating Cheerios with them today, along with her Thai for dinnerBeks & the crazy hair...again!

Pawpaw feeding the monster baby

Fun times at Popeyes off base...not exactly the same menu you'll find in the states. Mom had a shrimp burger & it was pretty good--even had a kick to it!

Trying some of her powers on UB...it usually works, as long as she's polite!

The Waggoner's Visit the DMZ

Sunday, January 4, 2009

Well, I had to sit this adventure out...I was going to go, but I chickened out. Not that I was frightened by the DMZ, nope. Scared to leave my wee one with her father! Daddy was all ready to give it a go, but I just couldn't do it. If Bekah took a bottle better or we had tried something else as a test-run (something that didn't require me to get on a bus for an entire day with no way to get back early!), maybe I could've done it. My family was okay with making the trip by themselves, and I just felt like they should see it. If you're coming to South Korea, then you do the DMZ...I am really looking forward to it, but I'll stop rambling & just share the pics for my mom's sake. That way, all the family back in the states can see they really were here & got to do some cool stuff! They were really happy they did it. AND, they got some cool souvenirs, so you can't beat that!

Not sure about all the details, you'll have to wait until I go for that...

The Christmas Dog

After reading this, I have decided, our family has the same issue. We live on the top floor of our building & life isn't so great for our four-legged family member these days. Not enough exercise & 2 little girls who make all sorts of noise & pull his hair out...not to mention the Wii makes him CRAZY. I mean CRAZY. It's a rough life around here. We just couldn't imagine coming without him. He has mellowed quite a, but he's still a big ol' puppy. :)

Anyhow, this dog LOVES Christmas. He is hilarious. Indy & Abby fight over opening presents. He just started taking presents from under the tree and unwrapping them. This brought down the wrath of Abby. Fortunately, Pawpaw & Grandma came prepared, and he had another gift under the tree from his Uncle Bill & Auntie Sharm! It is fun to watch him run from person to person & get so excited. Here he is...(photos taken by Uncle Ben on his much-faster-than-his-older-sister's camera!)

He's always in the middle of things...even while napping!

Our Special Morning

Friday, January 2, 2009

Since Pawpaw, Grandma & Uncle Ben had to leave on the 21st, we had decided to go ahead and have a morning of gift opening so that they could be here. It was very fun and we were so happy to have such a special treat--the best gift of all was their visit!

The sisterly choke hold

Pawpaw found a fancy new hat for Uncle Ben. Grandma thought it was going to frighten him! Little did she know...

Everyone liked it! Why didn't I get one? Hmmm...

Hey there, cowboy

Mario Kart -- does anyone know if there is a 12-Step Program for this?

New tradition=doughnuts for breakfast!
Recipe:
1. Refrigerated biscuits (I get the smaller ones...Grands are okay, but they make BIG doughnuts)
2. Heat oil in a pan (or better yet, FRY DADDY)
3. Make a nice cooling rack, as Uncle Ben did, above right :)
4. Have your goodies ready...cinnamon & sugar was our favorite. We also had: pink sugar, various Christmas decorations, icing, etc.
5. Find something small enough to cut the middle of the biscuit out & don't forget to cook the doughnut holes!
6. Go for it. It's easy. I was going to make some incredibly difficult rolls for breakfast & that didn't happen. Turns out, we were just as happy with our new treat!

Bloggy love,

p.s. I'm off the doughnuts for now...enjoy them for me! :)

Happy 2009!

Happy New Year!

We have been partying for days now.

HAHAHA.

Wait...it might depend on what you consider partying. It all started on New Year's Eve. I went to a mini Girls' Night Out at the movies. It was great. I cried. And cried. Marley & Me was good, but a tad depressing. I had read the book, but my memory isn't so good. Hit a little too close to home with the whole yellow lab thing. How I miss our big yellow lab sweetie, Buck. Real upbeat way to kick off 2009. After I got home, I even cried when I was telling Brad about it. After I got myself under control, we watched Prince Caspian and worked hard at staying up until midnight!

Yesterday, we had a pajama day. After an action packed day of Wii & putting Christmas decorations away, Brad & I got a puzzle out. 1,000 pieces. Fun times. I guess the valance I have to sew and 200 scrapbooks I have to work on can wait. Brad came to bed at 2a.m. See, we are PARTY ANIMALS.

Big news: Bekah is SO BIG...see for yourself! :)

***Please try to ignore her mother's irritating voice!
